How is Air Charter Priced?
Most air charter companies do not own the aircraft in their fleets, and instead are managing the aircraft, whether it is a business jet, turboprop, or smaller piston airplane. The owner of the aircraft negotiates a lease-back arrangement with the charter company to handle the operation, maintenance, and charter of the airplane. The aircraft owner and the charter company will agree to a percentage the owner will receive when the airplane is used for aircraft charter. Since these agreements are bound by a contract, the charter company is not at liberty to charge any price they want for a flight – they must abide by the terms of the lease-back agreement. The charter company will set the prices of each aircraft in their fleet to make sure they make a certain level of profit after paying the owner the percentage previously agreed to. While the charter company would make more money if they were the only ones to arrange for charters (getting full retail for the flights), most companies realize they can make more by ensuring the aircraft is flying as much as possible. By providing a discounted rate to brokers and other charter companies, their aircraft is flying more often, and revenue goes up – both for the charter company and the owner of the aircraft. Because AirCompair represents a high volume in sales to the charter companies, they provide us these industry insider discounts, and AirCompair passes these savings directly to our membership – without adding expensive booking fees or commissions.
Charter Companies are Brokers Too
Occasionally we will hear a potential AirCompair Member tell us that they have a favorite charter company they do business with, and this company extends them discounts since they fly so much. Being a preferred customer is great! We love to hear when air charter customers are saving money! But individual air charter companies have only so many aircraft in their fleets. What happens when one of their “preferred” customers’ calls up to charter an aircraft and the fleet is unavailable. It’s simple; the charter company will simply contact a competing charter company and “re-sell” that companies aircraft to their customer. When this happens, while the customer may be paying their favorite company the money for the charter, the prices for this charter have gone up. How much? Well, remember…the charter company that is actually operating the charter is making money – even when they discount the aircraft for your favorite company to resell to you. Your favorite charter company is also adding a percentage (usually 5% or $1000, whichever is greater), and is essentially simply acting as an air charter broker themselves. This entire practice is very common in the air charter industry. The only problem…you, the charter customer are paying too much. AirCompair gets discounted rates from charter companies worldwide. So if one charter company does not have available aircraft, we find you another company – just like your favorite charter company would do – but our prices will remain at the lowest levels available in the industry.
